Newcastle United are eager to offer £62.5 million for the promising forward Matheus Cunha, in competition with Arsenal and Man United.
According to the Daily Mail, Cunha is one of their top targets this summer, though probably a signing may depend on the prospects of qualifying for the Champions League.
There is indeed competition for the Premier League’s few big talents, so ensuring that whoever is there bests Man City and Aston Villa to ensure a solid grip in the top five may be the key.
Cunha is also well-loved by Arsenal and Man United; the Gunners’ tiring search for an able number nine has taken a more serious turn with injuries afflicting Gabriel Jesus.
Similarly, on their end, the Red Devils have not seen a reliable hitman for a while now, and with Rasmus Hojlund having a crisis of confidence and Joshua Zirkzee being more of a linking man than a goalscorer, Cunha could be a welcome relief.
With a £62.5 million release clause in the contract of Wolverhampton’s top goalscorer, the summer is bound to see some big-money bids for him, signifying his exit unless, of course, if someone is willing to pay through the nose.
The paper describes further that sources have also confirmed the interest from Newcastle, and Cunha is regarded as someone who can forge a good link with other Brazilian contingent members of the squad: Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
Eddie Howe should be enhancing his squad ahead of a return to European competition next season—be it the Europa Conference League or Champions League—due to an injury crisis that has ravaged his options in attack this season.
Cunha remains strongly fancied by Nottingham Forest, but it is understood that the player wants to join one of the big six, notwithstanding the fact that Forest might qualify for the Champions League.
However, Newcastle seem to have made the first move in the race to get Cunha.
Sources reveal that Cunha’s agent will fly to England shortly for negotiations with several potential suitors, having already made some initial contact with United.
The report is optimistic that Alexander Isak will stay, even if the subject of major transfer speculation this summer.
This is partly due to the rise of his stock in the last two seasons; it’s believed to take over £100 million to lure one of the most lethal finishers in the world away from St. James’ Park.
